K Wata: Give U Space (digital, Short Span, May 2026)

There’s something special about this. I gotta admit, I find a lot of dub techno pleasant but samey. This LP finds New York’s Kenzo Perron doing something which is, broadly speaking, dub techno, but very much doing it his own way. At times it feels like he’s deconstructing the genre a bit like Spatial did with sound clash that one time. I think I detect subtle touches of anything from 2-step to Sheffield bleep in places, and there are parts which remind me of Francis Harris’s classical-tinged deep house. But even when he’s playing it more straight, genre-wise, it sparkles with invention. Prepare to get lost in a swirly, shifting world of bloops and blips and echoey beats. As the saying goes, it’s mean, moody, and magnificent.

I bought this from Boomkat. They call it Techno / House.
