Well, now. Graham Massey out of 808 State and Brian Dougans out of Future Sound Of London (under his solo alias Humanoid), collaborating in the year of our lord 2026? Don’t mind if I do. It even has artwork by Strictly Kev and DJ Food (credited here as Openmind). The acid sounds you’d expect are present and correct, but somehow they don’t sound irredeemably retro. There’s plenty of invention and variety in the sound palette. There’s a lovely hypnotic swirly vibe going on. Somehow it manages to combine 21st-century production values with that old-school Chicago feeling that everything could fall apart at any moment. There’s a sneaky little syncopated polyrhythm going on much of the time. There’s just the right amount of melody, just the right amount of jazzy flourish. All four tracks are unashamedly big, and all of them definitively bang. I have no idea what the young persons make of this, but for twenty minutes this old raver is very smiley.
I bought this from the label’s bandcamp page.
