Laura Naukkarinen’s HEM. Någonstans is a smashing record, combining traditional Finnish folk instruments with modern electronic production. It was one of my albums of 2015, and one that has stood the test of time, too. This is quite different, all bubbling Buchla loveliness (the Caterina Barbieri comparison is inevitable) and layered wordless vocals. It’s warm and light in mood, but far from insubstantial, with an almost Reichian intricacy to its layering and a 5/4 time signature to keep you on your toes. It is, to reach for two of my most overused adjectives (sorry), deeply involving and utterly delightful.
I bought this from Boomkat. They call it Electronic, Folk / Roots.
