Jon Hopkins: Immunity (CD, Domino, May 2013)

The dominant sound here is a dense, driving techno, with a heavy, propulsive beat and a gloopy, psychedelic synth sound which almost remind me of kosmiche. It’s really quite good fun. It could be a bit much, but this heady fare is leavened by occasional floaty ambient tracks. The penultimate track, Sun Harmonics, features the kind of uplifting, widescreen wordless vocals used to great effect by the likes of Orbital and Gui Boratto: perfectly charming, but here I somehow find them a bit precision-engineered for that huggy anthemic moment. All is forgiven when we get to the closing title track, which is centred around an echoey piano melody and seems honestly emotional. A really good record, but not quite a great one.

I bought this from Boomkat. They call it Techno / House.
