Clarice Jensen: In Holiday Clothing Out Of The Great Darkness (digital, 130701, October 2025)

I am on record as being a sucker for a nice bit of cello, and this is a very nice bit of cello indeed. (I read that this marks return to the centering of the instrument for Jensen, although it was also at the core of the last record of hers I bought, 2018’s For This From That Will Be Filled.) It is firmly in the neoclassical electro-acoustic mould. And, with its slightly processed sound and its looping layers, I guess there’s an argument that it’s a teensy bit 2010s. But, honestly, I’m not going to criticise it for that. It is soaringly melodic, it makes great use of the rich harmonics of the cello, it is pleasingly spiky and dynamic, and it oozes warmth. The electronic elements are subtle and generate some wonderful moments, like the very slight bassy hum which comes in a few minutes into the first number (the first part of the title track — the second part appears later on) which elevates what was already a rather lovely track into something even more special. So, yes, I am well and truly sucked in by this one.

I bought this from the artist’s bandcamp page.
