This solo debut from Deniz Omeroglu (described as Istanbul-born, Amsterdam-based) is very much an album of two halves. Happily, she plays an absolute blinder in both.
The first half was apparently composed spontaneously in the aftermath of a heartbreak, and consists of contemplative, woozy synth tracks. There are largely wordless vocals, of a sighing nature, though far from mournful. The opening number has a repeated spoken refrain of “the search for love continues”, which very much sets the tone. Brick House drifts into dream pop, with a ‘proper’ vocal (I guess in Turkish, though don’t quote me) over its wonky, pitch-bending, analogue-sounding machine-melody. It’s very lovely. Even more lovely is the plinky melody and beguiling modulations of the aptly named Cloud Sofa.
The tempo kicks up a notch on the second half, with the warm synth melodies now floating over skittering beats, leaning gently in the direction of an IDM-ish ambient techno, albeit of the most ethereal kind. And, you know what, this is all very lovely, too. A far more fresh than these nineties-ish references make it sound. By the time the closing track, Aftersun, shuffles into gear, I am just swooning.
I bought this from the label’s bandcamp page.
