Yo yo yo, it’s another Basinski, this time in working with Richard Chartier, and blow me if it isn’t another flipping masterpiece.
For the most part, this is a more classically minimal affair than the Basinski / Schaefer collab from a couple of years ago. The opening two minutes of this are the exception: they are quite blaringly loud, which has the effect of making the listener (at least, this listener) turn the volume down, meaning the much quieter material that follows plays piano or sometimes pianissimo enough that you’re kind of straining to hear the details. I assume that this is a deliberate ploy and I am happy to go along with it. The next half an hour or so is one of those atmospheric loops which I just can’t get enough of: it is utterly serene. Then, halfway through the hour-long piece, we get another melodic fragment, and a tripping little rhythmic component starts pitter-pattering along underneath. Slowly, a gentle industrial hum starts to emerge. The melody recedes into the distance, almost forgotten. That pitter-patter fades out. By the end, we’re basically just listening to echoes of echoes. And yet, I find it utterly captivating. Genius-tier stuff.
I bought this from Boomkat. They call it Modern Classical / Ambient.
