For some reason, the youtube music algorithm decided to suggest this to me — presumably on the basis that back in the day I rinsed both Steve Gunn’s Live At The Night Light album and his collaboration with Mike Gangloff, Melodies For A Savage Fix… although these both came out about a decade ago, so it did feel a little bit random.
But I’m glad that it did, because this 21-minute standalone track of classical-guitar-based ambient is rather delightful. The instrument and Gunn’s delicately emotional playing are at the centre, swathed in a kind of shimmering layer of processing effects. This is unshowy stuff, but it has a fragility that I find deeply appealing. It’s a kind of coffee-break length work and ideally suited to creating a little oasis of serenity in the middle of a busy day.
