Terr: Consciousness As A State Of Matter (digital, Phantasy Sound, April 2023)

I had an odd moment when the first track here, Tale Of Devotion, started playing: it sounds uncannily like Jane Weaver covering I Feel Love. Which is not a bad thing, just a hard thought to get out of your head. The next track, Only For Tonight, is rather different: if we’re playing the likenesses game, maybe we could say that this is a bit like Octo Octa reimagining Blur’s Girls & Boys for the tinder generation — and it’s a cracker, by the way. And so Terr (aka Daniela Caldellas) bounces around cosmic disco and electro-pop before veering off into more acid housey territory. There is a big magpie energy thing going on here. And, you know what, it works. Partly because, beneath the shiny surface, she is clearly serious about her craft, and the attention to details shines through in the sounds and the production. And partly because the melodies are just so damned catchy.

I bought this from the artist’s bandcamp page.
